WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chair of the House Committee on Financial Services, announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded a $2,215,647 grant to the City of Gardena for the GTrans Zero-Emission Bus Replacement Project, which will enable the City’s GTrans transit system to purchase as many as five zero-emission battery electric buses to replace older buses that have reached the end of their useful life.

“I am proud to announce that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $2,215,647 grant to the City of Gardena for the GTrans Zero-Emission Bus Replacement Project,” said Congresswoman Maxine Waters. “This innovative project will enable GTrans to purchase new zero-emission buses to replace older vehicles in its fleet, improve transit service reliability, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our region.”

Congresswoman Maxine Waters requested $4.4 million in funding for GTrans in April of 2021, during House consideration of transportation infrastructure legislation. While the House-passed infrastructure bill included the Congresswoman’s $4.4 million request, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which was signed into law, did not designate funding for specific projects, but instead included a total of $39 billion for public transit programs nationwide, which enabled the $2,215,647 grant award for GTrans.

“I am proud that my efforts to secure funding for GTrans made this $2,215,647 grant possible,” said Congresswoman Maxine Waters. “I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress and the Biden administration to secure funding for leading-edge transportation projects in Gardena and throughout my congressional district and invest in the 21st Century infrastructure that my constituents deserve.”
