Rui Hachimura, a key role player for the Los Angeles Lakers, has adapted his game to support the team’s efforts this season. With star players Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves leading the offense, Hachimura and others have adjusted their roles to fit the team’s needs.
Since joining the Lakers, Hachimura has shifted from working in the mid to low post to being used more as a floor spacer. Over four years with Los Angeles, he has developed into a reliable shooter from long range, averaging 41.1% on three-point attempts. This season marks a career high for him in scoring with an average of 14.8 points per game while shooting 48.5% from beyond the arc.
Despite his improved performance potentially opening up opportunities for a larger role elsewhere, Hachimura remains focused on helping his current team succeed. Speaking with Dave McMenamin of ESPN, he said: “I’m not trying to be a superstar or anything. I’m just trying to help the team win – whatever they ask for. I like my role here. I’m not trying to be in a big three, I’m really trying to win the championship with this team. I like how they’ve been treating me given the roles and everything, very specific. Especially JJ has been really good with that. So, I’m happy.”
Head coach JJ Redick has been credited with fostering a selfless approach among his players aimed at building a winning culture within the organization.
Hachimura is currently playing in a contract year and will need to demonstrate value beyond scoring if he hopes to secure his next deal. The Lakers are looking for greater physicality from their roster, and Hachimura’s size could contribute through increased rebounding and off-ball movement.
Both Luka Doncic and Marcus Smart have praised Hachimura’s improvement on defense this season, highlighting his growing two-way impact on games.
