Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said on May 14 that the organization intends to respect the process LeBron James will take in deciding his future with the team. The Lakers face several decisions this offseason, including nine free agents and significant cap space to shape a roster around Luka Doncic.
James, who is approaching a potential record-setting 24th NBA season at age 41, has not yet announced whether he plans to return. His performance late in the regular season and playoffs demonstrated his continued ability to contribute, though questions remain about his stamina and how much salary should be allocated to him while maintaining flexibility for other role players.
Pelinka said at his annual end-of-season press conference, “I think in terms of LeBron, we probably haven’t seen a player that has honored the game to the extent that he’s honored the game. He’s given so much to his teammates, to this organization. And the thing we want to do more than anything else is honor him back.” He continued, “I think the first order of business there is allowing him to spend the time he needs to decide what his next steps are. Does he want to play another year in the NBA? That will be, as he said to you guys [Monday] night, family time. I think time with his inner circle. And we just want to honor that for him. Of course, any team, including ours, would love to have LeBron James on their roster. That’s a blessing in itself, just with what he does.”
While earlier speculation suggested James might not return after next season, recent indications point toward mutual interest between both sides for a possible reunion if James decides against retirement.
Head coach JJ Redick also addressed offseason priorities following L.A.’s elimination from playoff contention. Redick said he hopes Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves can all return next year as part of efforts toward building a competitive team moving forward.
The final decision rests with James regarding whether he wants play into an age-42 season; until then many questions about roster construction will remain unanswered.
