Pau Gasol, a former Los Angeles Lakers player, is being considered for a senior leadership position as the National Basketball Association and the International Basketball Federation discuss launching a new basketball league in Europe, according to information released on Mar. 30.
The proposal has drawn attention because it could change how European club basketball operates. The NBA and FIBA have confirmed they are exploring the idea of creating a league that would work alongside existing domestic competitions in Europe. Under this model, teams would continue playing in their home leagues but also compete in the new tournament through a merit-based qualification system.
Reports indicate that the potential structure includes 16 teams, with 12 permanent clubs and four spots available through qualification. Supporters of the project say it could help unlock more commercial opportunities for European basketball by attracting sponsors, broadcasters, and investors.
Gasol’s background makes him a notable candidate for an executive role if the league goes forward. He played professionally both in Spain and with the Lakers, won two NBA championships, served as vice president of the National Basketball Players Association, and has worked with organizations such as the International Olympic Committee since retiring from playing.
At this stage, no final decisions have been made about leadership or when the league might launch. However, discussions are ongoing between stakeholders from both sides of the Atlantic.
