Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle spoke on March 26 about the difficulty of preparing to face Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, ahead of a recent game between the two teams. Carlisle gave a direct assessment when asked about game planning for James, saying, “It’s sucks.”
Carlisle’s comments highlight the ongoing challenge that elite players like James present to opposing coaches and teams, even as their roles evolve over time. Despite no longer being the primary offensive focus for the Lakers, James remains an important contributor under head coach JJ Redick.
Carlisle elaborated on what makes defending against James so challenging: “Transcendent players change the game. He’s changed the game.” He also reflected on his long experience coaching against James: “I’ve seen it all too closely over the years. Mad respect for what he’s done over the years. Passing Robert Parish, for a wing player to do that over a period of 21, 22 years, there’s just no words.”
In their matchup with Indiana, James nearly recorded a triple-double with 23 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in 34 minutes on efficient shooting from both the field and free throw line.
Carlisle has faced off against James many times during his coaching career, including in high-profile games such as the 2011 NBA Finals when he was leading Dallas Mavericks. While Indiana is currently focused on improving its draft position this season, attention remains on how far veteran stars like James can lead their teams in pursuit of another championship.
