As the college football season concludes, Michigan State University has appointed Pat Fitzgerald as its new head football coach. This decision follows the dismissal of Jonathan Smith, who recorded a 9-15 record over two seasons, including a 4-8 performance this year.
Pat Fitzgerald takes on his first head coaching role since being dismissed by Northwestern in 2023 due to a hazing scandal. The university later cleared Fitzgerald of any wrongdoing after determining he was unaware of the alleged misconduct. He now aims to lead the Spartans back to success; the team last finished with a winning record in 2021.
Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, an alumnus of Michigan State, expressed optimism about Fitzgerald’s hiring. Johnson stated: “I was really inspired and encouraged by the words from Michigan State’s new head football coach Pat Fitzgerald. I love the fact that he has a proven track record of success coaching in the Big Ten! He also has strong relationships with high school coaches all over the Midwest…” Johnson shared these thoughts on social media on December 2, 2025.
Johnson is recognized as one of Michigan State’s most prominent basketball alumni and continues to support his alma mater. He maintains a close relationship with men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo, whose team currently holds an undefeated 8-0 record this season.
In addition to his comments on Michigan State football, it was announced that Magic Johnson will serve as Grand Marshal for the upcoming Rose Parade scheduled for January 1, 2026. As part of this tradition, he will participate in events along Colorado Boulevard and take part in pre-game ceremonies at the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal during the 112th Rose Bowl Game.
