Following a major trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, attention in the NBA has shifted to other high-profile moves ahead of the upcoming trade deadline. The Lakers’ acquisition of Doncic has been described as one of the most significant trades in recent memory, with Jaylen Brown calling it “one of the worst ever.” Despite this criticism, the Lakers view the deal as a way to reset their franchise and extend their championship aspirations.

Meanwhile, in a notable move within the Eastern Conference, the Atlanta Hawks have traded Trae Young to the Washington Wizards. In return, Atlanta receives C.J. McCollum and Corey Kispert. Young’s departure was anticipated due to his player option for nearly $50 million for the 2026-27 season and Atlanta’s lack of interest in an extension. The Wizards see Young as an offensive leader who can aid in developing younger players such as Alex Sarr and Bub Carrington.

Doncic and Young have had a connection since they were traded for each other during the 2018 NBA Draft. Responding to news of Young’s trade, Doncic said via Spectrum SportsNet: “Obviously we came in together and got traded for each other, so it’s been a lot of talk about me and him. But we have a great relationship, I have a lot of respect for him. If he’s excited for this new journey, I’m excited for him.”

Reports indicate that joining Washington was Young’s preference, aligning with his wish list as he joins a team focused on rebuilding. For Atlanta, acquiring McCollum—whose contract expires after this season—provides additional cap space and flexibility. The Hawks are expected to build around Jalen Johnson while exploring further roster changes.

The recent trades serve as reminders that top NBA talent remains available under certain circumstances. While these developments do not directly affect Doncic or the Lakers at present, they highlight ongoing opportunities ahead of the trade deadline as Los Angeles continues its pursuit of another championship.

In related discussions around future transactions, it is noted that following their acquisition of Doncic, league perception is that future first-round draft picks held by Los Angeles are now considered less valuable assets when compared to before.
