Luka Doncic said on March 14 that his pick-and-roll partnership with Deandre Ayton is developing well for the Los Angeles Lakers. The comment comes after Ayton delivered strong performances against the Minnesota Timberwolves and Chicago Bulls, following a period of decreased offensive production.

The chemistry between Doncic and Ayton has become important as the Lakers look to improve their play during a competitive playoff race. Earlier in the season, Ayton showed promise offensively and worked effectively with Austin Reaves, but his recent struggles had drawn criticism.

Doncic addressed the progress made with Ayton, saying, “Very good. In that third and fourth quarter, they wanted to blitz a little bit, so he saw the small guy and he was just playing bully ball down there. And then they went switch a couple times. So I think he’s been doing an amazing job.” This suggests that adjustments by both players are starting to pay off on the court.

Ayton’s adaptation to the Lakers’ system has taken time due to injuries and his preference for short rolls rather than traditional lob finishes at the rim. Despite these challenges, recent games indicate improved health and better team chemistry overall.

Ayton also acknowledged earlier frustrations about his role but said he has increased his energy and focus to match his teammates. His continued engagement will be key for the Lakers as they aim to secure their position in the playoffs.
