Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James is set to make his season debut against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night, after missing the start of the season due to a right sciatica issue. James had been sidelined since training camp while recovering from a nerve problem in his back. The team had initially aimed for a mid-November return, and his comeback aligns with that timeline.

James began practicing with the South Bay Lakers during the team’s recent five-game road trip and participated in his first full practice with the main roster on Monday.

The Lakers also announced that guard Gabe Vincent will return from a left ankle sprain after missing 11 games. This marks the first time this season that Los Angeles will have its complete 14-man roster available, as Marcus Smart (illness) and Rui Hachimura (left calf soreness) are both expected to play after sitting out Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

LeBron James’ appearance will be historic, as he becomes the first player to compete in 23 NBA seasons. Last year, James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, earning All-NBA Second Team honors and finishing sixth in MVP voting.

Integrating James back into the lineup may require adjustments for head coach JJ Redick. Luka Doncic has performed strongly so far this season, and Austin Reaves has emerged as an All-Star level secondary creator. Redick faces decisions regarding how best to utilize James without disrupting backcourt performance.

Redick’s rotation strategy will be closely observed now that all players are healthy. Minutes distribution among Hachimura, Smart, Vincent, Jake LaRavia, and Dalton Knecht—who has performed well recently—remains uncertain.

Austin Reaves commented on James’ return: “One person who isn’t concerned about LeBron James fitting right in with this Lakers team is Austin Reaves. While he admitted that it might take a little time for things to come together, Reaves believes LeBron’s high IQ will allow for him to figure out a way to fit in seamlessly and lift up the team overall.”

With improved health across their roster and a strong start to their season so far, the Lakers hope that having James back can help them reach new heights.
