LeBron James said on March 17 that the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory over the Houston Rockets felt similar to a playoff game, as the team relied on strong defense rather than high scoring to secure their sixth consecutive win. The Lakers held the Rockets to just 92 points, marking a shift from their recent offensive performances.
The significance of this win lies in its demonstration of the Lakers’ defensive capabilities against top-tier opponents. With four of their last six wins coming against teams ranked in the top six of their conference, the Lakers are showing signs they can compete at a high level as the postseason approaches.
James contributed 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists in the game. He described the matchup as “kind of like playoff basketball,” adding: “So two playoff teams just figuring out how to get a bucket, but also staying focused and locked in on both sides of the floor. That’s sometimes how playoff basketball is, you can’t just rely on the offensive end, you’ve gotta be able to buckle down and get stops.”
Throughout much of this season, critics questioned whether the Lakers could maintain defensive intensity when games became more competitive. Monday’s performance suggested that they may have addressed those concerns by holding Houston to only 35 points in the second half and just 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Head coach JJ Redick praised his team’s adjustments after halftime and highlighted their defensive execution against Kevin Durant and the Rockets. The win also gave Los Angeles some breathing room for securing a higher seed in their conference standings as they continue their late-season push.
As playoffs near, observers will watch closely to see if this improved defense continues against other strong opponents.
