LeBron James said on April 13 that he is looking forward to the 2026 NBA Playoffs as the Los Angeles Lakers prepare to face the Houston Rockets in the first round. The Lakers finished the season as the No. 4 seed, but will be without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves due to injuries.
The absence of key players puts more responsibility on James, who is now in his twenty-third year in the league. Despite these challenges, James remains optimistic about what lies ahead. “Listen, the postseason is about to be, as the young kids will say, lit,” James said on his Mind the Game podcast. “This shit is gonna be litty, it’s gonna be crazy, I’m looking forward to it. Me, personally, like, I don’t know how many more postseasons I got left in my career and we talked about this awhile ago, like, getting ready for the postseason, like that moment. It doesn’t matter what you did in the regular season. That shit is out the window now. It doesn’t matter. It starts again, this is it. I’m excited, man, I can’t wait.”
The playoff series against Houston comes with high stakes for both teams and marks a challenging matchup for Los Angeles given their current roster limitations. Some observers consider Houston a favorable opponent because of their offensive struggles earlier in the season; however, they have recently shown improvement with strong performances from Kevin Durant, Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun.
James has achieved much during his career but advancing past this round under these circumstances would add another significant accomplishment.
Looking ahead at potential matchups beyond Houston also brings some disappointment for fans and players alike; notably absent from this season’s contests was any meeting between James and Stephen Curry—two of basketball’s most prominent figures.
