LeBron James addressed the Los Angeles Lakers’ heavy defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 4, following a 139-96 loss in which the team struggled both offensively and defensively. Austin Reaves led the Lakers with 15 points, while James contributed 13 points in a game that saw the team outmatched from start to finish.
The significance of this loss is heightened by an injury to Luka Doncic, who suffered a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. The absence of Doncic adds further challenges for the Lakers as they look ahead to their next games. James said after the game that although their focus should be on Dallas, they are aware of what Oklahoma City can do. “Obviously our mindset should be about Dallas and not OKC, that’s our next matchup and then we’ll get to them. But yeah, we understand and know what they’re capable of,” James said on Spectrum SportsNet. “They beat the s— out of us tonight, obviously from the start. So when we get to that point, we’ll address that. But we have another game on this road trip.”
James pointed out that Oklahoma City’s roster construction makes them particularly difficult opponents for Los Angeles. “They have multiple wing defenders, multiple guys that can get up in the ball,” he said. “They try to speed you up as much as they can, they got great hands, great length. It’s hard versus a team like that when you’re giving them pick-sixes… That’s the game right there.” He also noted how facing such strong defense affected their performance early in the match.
According to James, adjusting after not playing against top defensive teams recently was challenging for his team: “Sometimes it takes a little bit to get adjusted when you haven’t played a team like that in a while… They did a great job obviously, they’re the defending champs.” He added praise for Oklahoma City’s defensive depth even without Alex Caruso.
James has previously commented on differences between these two teams during earlier meetings this season and described Oklahoma City as championship caliber compared with where he sees his own squad.
Looking forward, Doncic’s injury means changes are likely within Los Angeles’ lineup—and especially for James himself—as he anticipates adapting his role depending on how long Doncic is sidelined.
