The Los Angeles Lakers will play the Houston Rockets in the first round of the 2026 NBA playoffs, with Game 1 scheduled for Saturday, April 18 at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time on ABC, according to an April 12 announcement.
The matchup follows the Lakers’ win over the Utah Jazz, which secured them the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference and a final regular season record of 53-29. The playoff seeding depended not only on their victory but also on the Denver Nuggets defeating the San Antonio Spurs. If Denver had lost, Los Angeles would have moved up to third seed and faced Minnesota instead.
During this season’s regular matchups against Houston, Los Angeles won two out of three games. However, they suffered a significant loss to Houston by a margin of 23 points during their Christmas Day meeting. The Lakers will enter this series without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves due to injuries; both were key contributors in previous wins over Houston.
Marcus Smart has recently returned from injury and is expected to play an important role as a steadying presence for Los Angeles in Doncic and Reaves’ absence. “Most people outside the organization are counting Los Angeles out, but Smart said he’s actually excited about the challenges that lie ahead for the Lakers in the postseason because they’ll need to overcome them together as a team,” according to Marcus Smart.
An anticipated storyline for fans is Kevin Durant facing LeBron James in a playoff series for the first time since 2018. The rest of Los Angeles’ roster is projected to be available as they prepare for what many expect will be a physical series against Houston.
