The Los Angeles Lakers clinched a top-six seed in the Western Conference and won the Pacific Division title for the second straight year, following a loss by the Phoenix Suns to the Orlando Magic on Mar. 31. This result secured their placement ahead of their upcoming game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The achievement is significant as it allows the Lakers to avoid participating in the Play-In Tournament for a second consecutive season, after having competed in it three out of four previous years. The team’s strong performance during March played a crucial role, with fifteen wins out of seventeen games between Feb. 28 and March 30, including nine victories in a row against teams such as the New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, and Houston Rockets.

This success coincides with head coach JJ Redick’s first two seasons leading the franchise and marks another milestone since superstar Luka Doncic joined the team. Redick has now guided Los Angeles to both top-six finishes and at least fifty wins in each of his first two years as head coach; previously, they had reached fifty or more wins only once over thirteen seasons before his arrival.

An additional benefit for clinching this playoff spot is that Los Angeles will have five days off between their last regular season game on April 12 and their first postseason matchup on either April 18 or April 19. This period of rest could be important given injuries sustained throughout this season by key players Austin Reaves and LeBron James.

LeBron James commented on team chemistry after a recent win: “We’re in a good place right now,” James said. “The chemistry is high. Everyone loves being around each other. We love playing for one another. We love being off the floor with one another. It’s a good tight-knit group and we gotta carry that for the rest of the regular season then I feel like the postseason is a whole new season.”

With improved health expected after several days’ rest and strong internal dynamics among players, observers will watch whether these factors help propel Los Angeles further into this year’s playoffs than last season when they were eliminated in round one.
