The Los Angeles Lakers are exploring potential additions to their playoff roster following a series of injuries, the team announced on Apr. 10. Head coach JJ Redick and the organization are evaluating both internal and external candidates to fill a newly opened spot before the postseason begins.
This development comes as the Lakers face setbacks with key players Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves sidelined due to injuries that are expected to keep them out for at least the start of the playoffs. Marcus Smart is also working towards a return, but in their absence, the team is seeking additional ball-handling and scoring support.
To address these needs, Los Angeles recently waived Kobe Bufkin after he was signed post-trade deadline but did not meet expectations during his opportunities on court. This move creates an opening on the roster just ahead of postseason eligibility deadlines. Notably, players who were released by other teams after March 1—such as Cam Thomas from Milwaukee Bucks—are ineligible for playoff participation.
Among those under consideration is veteran guard Chris Paul, who was sent home from the L.A. Clippers earlier this season and has previously indicated this would be his final year in the NBA. Paul has longstanding ties to Lakers rumors and could potentially join longtime friend LeBron James for one last playoff run if selected. Other possible options include Lonzo Ball, recently waived by Utah Jaxx after being traded from Cleveland Cavaliers; Cole Anthony, formerly with Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns; Spencer Dinwiddie, who last played with FC Bayern Munich; Drew Timme; and Nick Smith Jr., both currently two-way contract players whose contracts would need upgrading for playoff eligibility.
Redick’s trust in Timme’s development was evident when he earned his first start recently against Oklahoma City Thunder following recognition as part of the All-NBA G League Second Team. Meanwhile, Smith Jr.’s shooting ability has been highlighted throughout his appearances this season.
As they prepare for postseason play amid uncertainty around player health, all eyes remain on how Los Angeles will complete its rotation.
