The Los Angeles Lakers announced on Apr. 9 that Marcus Smart and Jaxson Hayes will not play in Thursday night’s game against the Golden State Warriors due to injuries.
This update is important for the Lakers as they approach the end of the regular season and prepare for the playoffs. The absence of key players could impact their performance, especially with several other players already sidelined.
Smart has missed eight consecutive games after injuring his right ankle during a win over the Orlando Magic on March 21. Although he was initially listed as questionable for the game against the Warriors, he was ultimately ruled out for a ninth straight contest. Hayes is also unavailable because of left foot soreness. With this being the first night of back-to-back games, there is speculation that both players might be held back in hopes they can return Friday against the Phoenix Suns, but this remains uncertain.
Smart’s role has been crucial since joining the starting lineup, serving as a central figure in defense and contributing as an additional ball-handler on offense. His presence is considered even more significant now that Luka Doncic (Grade 2 left hamstring strain) and Austin Reaves (Grade 2 left oblique injury) are out for the remainder of the regular season. Despite not always posting high numbers, Smart’s impact has been described as vital to team cohesion during this challenging period.
LeBron James will be available to play against Golden State; however, Stephen Curry will miss another game after recently returning from a knee injury that had kept him sidelined since January. In light of these absences, Luke Kennard has taken on more responsibilities handling the ball and creating plays alongside James.
Head coach JJ Redick faces decisions regarding his backcourt rotation with so many injuries affecting guard positions. Players such as Bronny James, Adou Thiero, Nick Smith Jr., Dalton Knecht, and Kobe Bufkin have all received opportunities recently. As postseason approaches, Redick may narrow down his rotation to focus on those most ready to contribute.
