The Houston Rockets announced on April 18 that Kevin Durant will not play in Game 1 of their playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers due to a right knee contusion. Durant was initially listed as questionable after sustaining the injury during practice, but head coach Ime Udoka confirmed before the game that he would be unavailable.

Durant’s absence is significant for the Rockets, who are considered favorites in this first-round matchup. The team had been expected to benefit from key injuries on the Lakers’ side, including Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves being sidelined. The anticipated showdown between LeBron James and Durant will now be delayed until at least Game 2.

During the regular season, Durant played in 78 games—the most since his 2018-19 campaign—and averaged 26 points, 5.5 rebounds, and nearly five assists per game while shooting over fifty percent from the field and more than forty-three percent from three-point range. Leg injuries have troubled him throughout his career, including an ankle issue earlier this year.

Udoka stated that Reed Sheppard will enter the starting lineup in place of Durant. With playoff stakes high, observers note that missing a star player like Durant could give momentum to a shorthanded Lakers team looking for an upset.

Looking ahead in the series, defensive strategies against Durant remain a topic of discussion. In previous matchups this season, double-teaming and blitzing forced turnovers but did not fully contain his scoring ability. Marcus Smart addressed how challenging it is to guard one of basketball’s most efficient scorers in a playoff setting.

The Rockets’ performance without their four-time scoring champion may shape both teams’ prospects as they continue through this postseason.
