Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has highlighted the importance of allowing Luka Doncic to use his creativity on the court. Doncic, who joined the Lakers as a star guard, is known for his ability to make difficult passes and create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.
Redick, who previously played alongside Doncic, discussed his approach to coaching the player during an interview with Spectrum SportsNet. “It’s similar to some of the heat checks. I’ve talked about this, he’s an engine that’s fully on and he likes to create out there. That’s part of what makes him a great player. I think because I played with him, I have a pretty good understanding of that. Not to say it doesn’t test your patience at times, but you have to be willing to live with some of the stuff that he tries because more often than not, you’re gonna get a great result and he had some great passes, he made some amazing shots. But there’s that creative element that he needs to thrive, and you’ve got to allow that.”
Doncic’s playing style includes taking risks on offense, which can sometimes lead to turnovers or missed opportunities. However, Redick emphasized that these risks are often outweighed by positive results on the court.
Recently, Doncic was named Western Conference Player of the Week for games played from January 19 through January 25. During this period, he averaged 34.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 9.7 assists and 2 steals per game while helping lead the Lakers to two wins in three games.
The Lakers are working toward becoming championship contenders again and view Doncic as a key factor in their progress.
