Luka Doncic will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 regular season due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, according to an April 8 announcement. The Los Angeles Lakers, who had been considered a strong playoff contender, face a significant challenge with his absence.
Doncic has struggled with hamstring issues throughout the season. The timing of this latest injury is particularly difficult for both him and the team as they approach the postseason. Despite this, he is actively seeking rehabilitation options and is currently in Europe for specialized treatment.
Head coach JJ Redick confirmed that Doncic is in Spain working on his recovery. “I’m not gonna share how long he’s going to be over there, but I think he’s in good spirits,” Redick said before Tuesday’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. “I think he’s, in my conversations with him, he’s motivated to do everything possible. I know for him, it’s hard for him not to be on a basketball court.
“That’s his happy place. He’s one of the handful of guys that really play year round, and it’s not just international competition, but he likes to be in the gym. He likes to be working on his craft and I think it’s hard for him. He wants to get back on the court.”
The efforts by Doncic reflect his commitment both to fans and the organization; however, given that playoffs begin next weekend, there may be little opportunity for him to return during early rounds even if recovery progresses well.
The Lakers’ playoff hopes are further complicated by injuries not only to Doncic but also Austin Reaves. Magic Johnson expressed devastation at news of both players’ injuries despite no longer holding an official role with the franchise.
Looking ahead, uncertainty remains about whether treatments will allow Doncic any participation should Los Angeles advance further into postseason play.
