Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said on Apr. 16 that he trusts guard Bronny James to be ready as the team prepares for its first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets. The comments came after a practice session, with Redick emphasizing the need for all players to contribute in the absence of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
The situation is important for the Lakers, who will have to rely on less experienced players like James and Nick Smith Jr. due to injuries affecting key scorers. Redick said both guards must be prepared to step up during the postseason.
“We’re gonna have to have all hands on deck for the series. He’s got to be ready,” Redick said after practice on Wednesday. “Nick [Smith Jr.] will have to be ready. I think Bronny’s improved a lot. I think we trust him. The shooting piece, I’m a believer in, because of how well he shot it in the last two years in the G League. I know there was a stretch recently where he didn’t shoot it well and of course, he had a nice shooting game against Utah. He’s improved a ton defensively in terms of his body positioning, both on and off ball. We want him to continue to evolve as a disruptive defender as well.”
James has been getting more playing time over recent weeks and has shown improvement, especially with his three-point shooting percentage rising significantly during April games and his time in the G League earlier this season.
Redick also spoke about his own development as an NBA coach over his two seasons leading Los Angeles, noting growth within his role since taking charge.
As Los Angeles enters this crucial phase without some veteran players available, younger members like James are expected to play larger roles under increased pressure.
