Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said on March 12 that he is encouraged by the team’s recent defensive performances, following back-to-back strong showings against the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves.
The improvement in defense comes at a crucial time for the Lakers, who have struggled defensively for much of the season. Stronger defense could be key to their chances of contending for a championship.
Redick commented after the win over Minnesota, saying, “I’m encouraged by the defense, particularly. We’ve been trending in that direction now for 25 games to be above-average. I mean, … we’re not going to be the number one defense in the league. But to be, you know, above average, and to do – have those two performances against those two teams back to back, is really encouraging.”
In their recent games, the Lakers held the Knicks under 100 points and limited them to 43% shooting from the field and just 24% from three-point range. All-Star Jalen Brunson was held to 8-of-19 shooting. Against Minnesota, they allowed only 46% shooting overall and 25% from deep; Anthony Edwards shot just 2-of-15.
Players such as Marcus Smart have been recognized as setting the tone on defense while Jake LaRavia and Jarred Vanderbilt provide energy off the bench. Deandre Ayton has also contributed as a rim protector when focused. The defensive effort has extended to stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves as well.
Redick said that while he does not expect his team to become the top-ranked defense in the league, being above average is enough given their offensive capabilities. He added that these improvements are coming at an important point in the season.
