With several key players sidelined, including Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, LeBron James, and Gabe Vincent, Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick had to make adjustments for Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Maxi Kleber, who has not seen much playing time this season due to injury and competition in the center rotation, was called upon and played a season-high 25 minutes.
Kleber’s statistical contribution was modest—he made just one basket—but his presence was felt on both ends of the court. Redick praised Kleber’s performance after the game: “Maxi Kleber has not been in the rotation all season, he’s played in a couple of blowouts. Knew he was gonna be part of the rotation tonight and the guy makes one basket, but had a huge impact on the game with his physicality, his talk and just what I would describe as what we want Lakers spirit to be. Just being a great teammate, on the court, the defense, the rebounding, all the stuff that are winning basketball plays, he was a big part of it tonight.”
As an experienced NBA veteran now in his ninth season, Kleber focused on defending players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis and contributed through setting screens and consistent effort throughout the game. While his role may diminish when injured teammates return to action, Redick highlighted how valuable it is for Los Angeles to have veterans like Kleber available when needed.
The team also received encouraging news regarding LeBron James. After practicing with South Bay Lakers during their road trip recovery period from injury, James is expected to fully participate in practice Monday as they return home. His anticipated return could bolster L.A.’s lineup later this week.
