Los Angeles Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt and head coach JJ Redick addressed a recent sideline argument that took place during the team’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to an April 11 report. The incident involved raised voices between Vanderbilt and Redick, with teammates stepping in to separate them.
The issue comes at a critical time for the Lakers as they prepare for the playoffs without key players Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, who are expected to miss most of the first round. Both Vanderbilt and Redick have said they have moved past their disagreement, stressing that team unity is vital moving forward.
“We talked about it and moved on from it,” Vanderbilt said after a win over the Phoenix Suns. “At this point in the season, we both realized this is the group we’ve got. So it’s definitely not a time for everybody to separate. I think unity, especially with our group right now, is super important.”
Vanderbilt also discussed how adversity has shaped the team throughout the season. “For sure. I think adversity is inevitable in this league. Every team goes through ups and downs, injuries, losing streaks, winning streaks,” he said. “So there’s always highs and lows to the game, and the best teams are the ones that can withstand the tough times and bounce back quicker than other teams. So I think that’s something that we’ve been able to do this year.”
The forward’s playing time has fluctuated during his tenure with Los Angeles but could become more consistent due to roster injuries heading into postseason play.
In addition to Vanderbilt’s situation, starting center Deandre Ayton recently commented on being called out by Redick as well. Ayton described these moments as helpful for both himself and his teammates in staying focused.
As playoff games approach without some of their main contributors available, internal communication among players and coaches remains crucial for Los Angeles.
