James Worthy said on Mar. 21 that Luka Doncic stands out among Los Angeles Lakers greats for his consistency and dominance in clutch moments. Worthy’s comments came after Doncic scored 60 points to lead the Lakers to their eighth consecutive win, this time over the Miami Heat.
Worthy, a former Lakers star and current Spectrum SportsNet analyst, compared Doncic’s late-game performances to those of other franchise legends. “Historically, the Lakers have had clutch players,” Worthy said after the game on Spectrum SportsNet. “Kareem with the sky hook. Magic with his play. Kobe, Shaq. Fish hitting 0.4. But I don’t think we’ve ever seen one as consistent and as dominant as Luka Doncic. The way he controls the game with the ball in his hand and a shot maker. Like he’s a shot maker from anywhere and he’s really good at drawing fouls too. So just a solid performance by the team, but Luka starting in the second quarter and what he was able to produce and get this team going. Also LeBron didn’t really miss too many shots tonight either.”
Doncic’s recent performances have included scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter against Miami, shooting efficiently from both the field and free throw line, and delivering key plays in previous games against Houston and Denver.
The debate over who is truly the best clutch player in Lakers history continues, especially given Kobe Bryant’s reputation for late-game heroics during his two decades with the team. However, Worthy’s endorsement highlights Doncic’s growing legacy within the organization.
In addition to leading his team to victory, Doncic set a new franchise record for most three-pointers made in a single season by making nine threes against Miami, surpassing D’Angelo Russell’s previous mark.
