Dwight Howard announced his retirement from professional basketball on March 12, ending a career that began as the first overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic and included a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Howard’s decision to retire was shared through social media, where he reflected on his journey and expressed gratitude for his experiences. “Woke up today on the 12th of this month and I figured it’s time to move on from Superman! Im no super human… I cry ! I struggle! I feel like everyone else. Through the lies, the media and the hate I still show love and Smile Through The Storm. But now Im taking off the cape,” Howard said in his announcement.
The date of March 12 held special significance for Howard, who wore number 12 throughout much of his career. He stated that he plans to visit cities around the world on the 12th day of each month to perform random acts of kindness.
Howard’s career highlights include three consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards, five straight All-NBA First Team selections, eight consecutive All-Star appearances, and induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025. While he spent his most productive years with Orlando, Howard played a key role in helping the Lakers win an NBA Championship in 2020 after returning to Los Angeles following an earlier stint with the team.
Although Howard last appeared in an NBA game in 2022, he continued playing overseas and participating in exhibition games before deciding to retire. With his playing days behind him, Howard said he looks forward to spending more time with family and engaging in charitable activities.
