The Los Angeles Lakers secured a victory at home against the Houston Rockets in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series, according to an April 19 report. The team played without Kevin Durant, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves, all of whom were unable to participate due to injuries.

Deandre Ayton made his playoff debut for the Lakers with a strong performance, recording 19 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists while shooting eight-for-ten from the field. Despite being pleased with the result, Ayton said he is focused on maintaining perspective as the series continues. “It feels amazing, especially when you have home-court advantage,” Ayton said. “We did our job, we did what we were supposed to do. We’re not gonna sit here and not take this for granted. We have home court and that’s our job. We did our job tonight.”

Ayton has faced criticism during the season regarding his consistency but responded with an aggressive showing on offense and rebounding in Game 1. The win sets a positive tone for the series as Los Angeles aims to capitalize on its home-court advantage again in Game 2.

Head coach JJ Redick has underscored Ayton’s importance throughout the season and leading into the playoffs—a sentiment that Ayton acknowledged after the game gave him confidence going into this matchup. “It means a lot. I could feel the trust JJ had in me all practice week,” Ayton said after the win. “It does a lot, giving an NBA player confidence, especially in this league… The first game, I really felt that… it’s the playoffs and I’m just glad we matched the physicality a little bit and we prolonged it all the way to the stretch at the end of the game and got the win.”

As Los Angeles looks ahead to Game 2 with hopes of extending their lead in front of their fans at home, observers will be watching if Ayton can continue his impactful play.
