The Los Angeles Lakers secured their fourth consecutive victory and seventh win in eight games with a 142-130 result against the Chicago Bulls, according to a March 13 report. While much attention was given to Luka Doncic’s performance and LeBron James’ return from injury, Deandre Ayton’s recent play was also highlighted.
Ayton recorded his second straight double-double, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds just two days after posting 14 points and 12 rebounds in a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. His contributions have helped the Lakers move up to the third seed in the Western Conference.
Speaking about the team’s recent improvement, Ayton said after the game, “We’re playing really hard. We’re playing with a sense of urgency and we’re playing together. I think we’re emphasizing competitiveness, we’re competing in every aspect. Effort, 50/50 chances and just really attacking the ball on both ends and closing out these possessions and just being pretty scrappy.” He added, “Teams have been coming in and throughout the whole season teams have been winning that scrap game and that effort game. So I feel like we’ve tightened it up to where it’s become a thing of us.”
Ayton acknowledged that there were times earlier in the season when other teams outworked the Lakers for loose balls or offensive rebounds. Addressing his own performance, he said, “Felt like I picked up my energy and my focus. You know, I finally caught up with the team. That’s about it.”
LeBron James also played a key role in his return by adapting his approach due to injuries among important role players on the roster. James emphasized that he can adjust his game as needed for team success.
As Ayton continues to provide consistent energy on both ends of the court, observers note that this could make the Lakers more competitive as they approach critical games.
