Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James and Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg faced off on April 7 in a game that highlighted both experience and emerging talent. James recorded nearly a triple-double with 30 points, nine rebounds, and 15 assists for the Lakers, while Flagg led the Mavericks to victory with 45 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists.
The matchup was notable as it brought together one of basketball’s most accomplished veterans and a rising star who has been compared to James for his versatility and athleticism. Flagg said after the game on Spectrum SportsNet: “Grew up watching him go through his whole career, so it’s really impressive, obviously first of all, just to watch him and see him be able to do the things he’s still able to do out there. But it’s a dream come true. These are the moments, these are the times, to be able to match up with somebody like that with the career he’s had, he’s obviously one of the greatest, so it’s incredible.”
At just 19 years old, Flagg is drawing attention for his performance this season and is considered by some as a candidate for Rookie of the Year. Observers note that he could also enter conversations about All-Star or All-NBA honors if his play continues at this level.
This contest was also significant for being the Lakers’ first game without Luka Doncic (hamstring injury) and Austin Reaves (oblique injury), both sidelined for at least the rest of the regular season. In their absence, James took on an increased role as primary creator for Los Angeles.
The meeting between James and Flagg made NBA history as well: it marked the first time that both a teenager and a player aged 40 or older each scored at least 20 points in one game.
As both players continue their respective journeys—James extending an already storied career while Flagg begins what could be an impactful tenure—their performances serve as markers of transition within professional basketball.
