The Los Angeles Lakers have maintained strong performance during LeBron James’ absence due to sciatica, with notable contributions from Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Doncic was expected to deliver impressive results this season, but Reaves has also elevated his game to an All-Star level in the early part of the year.
With James set to return, there is anticipation about how his reintegration will affect team dynamics, including changes in players’ minutes and roles. Despite these potential adjustments, Reaves expressed confidence that James’ high basketball IQ would allow for a smooth transition.
“Yeah, man, I think there’s, we’re still as a whole group trying to, still figure out how to play alongside one another,” Reaves said. “Got some reps at it last year. But like I said, still a whole new team. I would assume that it’s gonna take a little bit to get fully used to. But once again, like I said, after the the Milwaukee game, he’s a student of the game. I’m sure he is been dissecting the game in whatever theory that he has to figure out a way to come back and make it seamless.”
Last season, James adapted well after the Lakers acquired Doncic by shifting into more off-ball duties on offense and taking on greater responsibility directing defensive schemes. According to Reaves, LeBron’s presence alone brings value beyond specific skills.
“I don’t know if there’s a specific thing, just presence,” Reaves added. “He’s, in my opinion, the greatest player to ever touch basketball. And I guarantee you, if you ask basically our whole team, a lot of the young guys would say he is their favorite player ever. So his presence, his ability to lift up a team and obviously his IQ. Yeah, it’s just, it’s good to have him back.”
Head coach JJ Redick addressed how he plans to bring James back into the lineup smoothly. Redick pointed out that LeBron’s adaptability throughout his career should help him positively impact the Lakers when he returns.
James’ return is expected not only to provide experience but also leadership for both younger players and veterans as they continue through the season.
